nabling Abilities in Dementia - The DementiAbility Way
Useful Tips and Tools for Caregivers Hosted by The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County, this session will provide an overview of the relationship between the brain, the personal narrative, the environment and behavioural expressions in dementia, with the focus on enabling the abilities of those in our care. A brief explanation of these relationships and examples of how these methods can be considered during the COVID-19 pandemic, will be discussed.
Gail Elliot, BASc, MA, is a Gerontologist, Educator, Author and Dementia Specialist and Founder of DementiAbility Enterprises Inc., Burlington, Ontario. Gail retired from McMaster University in 2012 with a vision of changing the face of dementia. Since that time she has started her own business, DementiAbility Enterprises Inc., and created educational programming, and other related resources, for both the person with dementia and those who provide support and care. With a solid grounding in research from diverse disciplines in aging and dementia, she focuses on moving person-centred centred care into action. The goal of Gail's work is to support the “whole person” in a prepared environment through an understanding of brain, life story, environments and behaviour. The DementiAbility Methods teach carers to think differently about dementia, thus changing the focus from one of loss to one of exposing abilities. With a focus on the person, rather than the task, the DementAbility Methods provide the tools that are aimed at enabling abilities and setting each individual up for success. These methods create positive outcomes by teaching people to create environments that are set us for success, thereby adding meaning, purpose, connection and joy to each day. Gail has taught the DementiAbility Methods across Canada and abroad, inspiring care providers to use their new knowledge to enable, engage and enhance the lives of those in their care. Gail is changing the face of dementia across the country - and around the globe - one person, one family, one organization - one step at a time.
