- La longevidad se refiere a la superación de la expectativa de vida. Ocurre cuando la duración de la vida en una persona o en una sociedad es más larga en comparación con otras. Además, la longevidad depende del contexto; por ejemplo, una persona con síndrome de Down puede ser longeva si ha superado los 60 años de vida.
- La longevidad se asocia con una buena salud y una calidad de vida óptima que han permitido esa prolongación. Está influenciada por diversos factores, como la genética, el estilo de vida, la nutrición, el ambiente, la actividad física, el acceso a la atención médica, entre otros aspectos.
- En las últimas décadas, se ha producido un aumento significativo en la longevidad en el ámbito global. Esto se debe a los avances en la ciencia y la medicina, así como a mejoras en las condiciones de vida y el acceso a la atención médica.
Una mayor longevidad, sumada a la disminución en las tasas de natalidad, han provocado un envejecimiento poblacional en Iberoamérica. Esto presenta retos para el sostenimiento futuro de los sistemas de protección social. Sin embargo, la longevidad no es el problema, sino la falta de preparación de las personas, la sociedad y el Estado para el envejecimiento activo» (Baca & Vega, 2018).

- Una persona que se ocupa de conversar con personas para que puedan construir una visión de cómo querrían aprender a ser, a convivir, a hacer y a conocer según pasan los años.
Cuando los seres humanos vivimos mucho más que nuestros abuelos y abuelas y que nuestros padres, cuando en este momento viven más de cuatro generaciones y hasta cinco o seis de una misma familia, cuando es probable que muchos de nosotros lleguemos a ser centenarios o súpercentenarios la pregunta es: ¿No tenemos curiosidad por saber de qué se trata esta revolución? ¿Quiero saber cómo me influye? ¿Me convendría comenzar a pensar en mi vida, mis relaciones, mi disfrute pensando en una larga vida? ¿Querría saber cómo son las PersonasPerennials? ¿Es posible envejecer sin sentirse viejo? ¿Qué es la madurescencia? ¿Quiero aprender a gestionar mi longevidad? ¿Cómo lo haría?

- First, we must think differently about the assets that enable us to age well. We need to build our “longevity portfolio” — those factors that can make or break our well-being.
- In our portfolio, we have our health; our education, skills, and work options; our relationships and social connections; our community resources; and our finances. Nurturing all these assets across a person’s life will determine whether everyone can reap the benefits of longevity.
- The World Economic Forum’s new Longevity Principles - a path forward
- The World Economic Forum's newly released Longevity Principles are a perfect framework and common language to guide us. They offer us a roadmap for developing new public and private sector practices and programs to enable aging well for all.
The principles call for ensuring financial resilience across key life events; providing universal access to financial education; prioritizing healthy aging as foundational for the longevity economy; evolving jobs and lifelong skill-building for a multi-generational workforce; designing systems and environments for social connection and purpose; and intentionally addressing longevity inequalities across gender, race, and class.
These are the initiatives we must commit to and work toward together. The demographics require it.
Our social contract was designed in the age of rotary phones, when the average life expectancy was 20 years less than today. In our new smartphone world where longevity is the norm, it’s time to reimagine that contract.
Only then will aging well be a right for all, instead of a privilege for a few.
- Second, we must make this a team effort. We cannot place the burden on individuals alone. As a society, we must create and fund the resources to support all in this journey. We must strengthen and expand our workforce development, retirement, and health care systems to ensure everyone can make the most of their assets at every key life moment.
- Third, we must remember that this is not a zero-sum game. Building resilience for all benefits us all. When every person has access to the support they need throughout life, every person can experience the dignity they deserve.
- The Forum’s Lead on the Longevity Economy, Haleh Nazeri, is the motor behind the principles. She notes during a 4-Quarter Lives podcast, that there are two ways of addressing the Longevity Economy: one as a disaster to be managed, the other as an opportunity to be leveraged. She strongly promotes the latter.

- The three principles of “longevity literacy” are quality of life, financial resilience and purpose. Together, this literacy empowers individuals to live a healthy and sustainable life with dignity and purpose while building resilience to address the challenges of an evolving world.
